Annie Leibovitz- Life Through a Lens

Annie Leibovitz is a famous portrait photographer that grew her fame in the 70’s and 80’s. This film discusses her journey as not only a female photographer but also a queer female photographer. One quote from Annie that stood out to me is “you can’t become an art teacher until you become an artist.” Hearing that from an iconic photographer as an art media and design student who wants to pursue a career in teaching is powerful and makes me want to expand my artistry. It is discussed in the film that Annie’s wife basically forced her to go into Rolling Stone to present her work. Annie walked in with a bag of her best photos and ended up landing herself a 10 year career as staff photographer and eventually chief photographer. During her career at Rolling Stone, she captured one of the most iconic album covers for John Lennon including his wife Yoko Ono in the photo. Yoko talks about how intimate this photo shoot was and how powerful it was for John to be naked and curled up next to her fully clothed body, as it represented their relationship and closeness. I love that we as an audience are able to hear from the perspective of one of Annie’s subjects. This helps us further understand her process in creating her iconic photographs and the amount of work, dedication and passion that goes into every photo. After watching this documentary, I can genuinely say I feel inspired to push myself as an artist and create artwork that I want to create and not let anyone stop me.
